Unique or Useless?

Some folks are so proud of being unique that is all they can speak of. All of their focus is directed to their personal state of being unique. When I saw this poster it struck me quite powerfully as in the world of academia much emphasis is placed on "individuality." This whole idea becomes somewhat contradictory to me after a period of time. This is simply due to the fact that we have a whole world basing their world view off of humanistic theories and doctrines; then, everyone walks around speaking of how "individual" or "unique" they are. I have to be careful about becoming cynical and caustic when thinking or researching this idea or issue. Why? The main reason is because typically those who shout their individuality the loudest tend to have the same haircut/style as a million other constituents, wear the same name brand of clothing, dress the same as everyone else and likes to be "seen" at the most stylish locations....just to name a few ways humanity tends to lack individuality. The list could go on.

Many young ladies declare their individuality, yet People Magazine, or some advertisement, comes out with Hollywood females wearing bare legs, skirts barely to the knees, big sunglasses and spike heels. Suddenly every young lady within a hundred mile radius pops up wearing a similar fashion. Or, a popular male music artist comes out with his hair mussed all over his head and all of the guys are suddenly wearing the same hair style. Then someone famous gets a tatoo and all of the sudden everyone thinks tatoos are great and wants one. And more..... What defines individuality or whether someone is truly unique or not?

Where does individuality start? Is it in our personality, the way that we conduct ourselves, our likes or dislikes, the things we like to do or places we like to go, the way we talk, how intellectual we are or the way that we share who we are through our outward appearance? My personal belief is that the outward man is a reflection of the inward man. An "individual" that is truly unique will portray exactly who he is from the inside out and will be different in his uniqueness. People that consistently follow every fad and fashion and strive so hard to be like their peers do not portray individuality. They simply portray an inward being that is pressured by what others think and that lacks self esteem or self confidence.

On the flip side......some strive so hard to be unique that they become an outcast or push the boundaries of societal mores or norms. At that point they lose their effectiveness. Although, they might have a specific crowd they associate with, those peers tend to exhibit the same characteristics or habits. They, therefore, are on the outside looking in also. So then comes the question. Are those individuals even truly unique?

This can apply also in a spiritual sense. Some are so proud of their separation or "uniqueness" that they are no earthly good. When we adopt this mentality we become in danger of our piety overpowering our humble servitude. It is easy to get caught up in this mentality, so one must strive consistently to remember that we who follow Christ are first a servant. When we get so stuck on our religiosity (new word?) we begin to lose our effectiveness. Reaching out, working in the kingdom of God, loving our neighbor as ourselves, helping each other, and prefering one another.... These characteristics truly exemplify uniqueness in our actions rather than simply what we "declare" ourselves to be. We can be or become so "unique" that we are not useful. My desire is more than simply to be unique but to, even more so, be useful. Especially in the work of God.

Talulah does the Hula from Hawaii....It's a Shame! :)

Name change for Talula Does The Hula from Hawaii

Yahoo News reports today that a New Zealand judge has made a child the ward of the state so that her name can be changed. Her name? Talulah does the Hula from Hawaii. What is your initial reaction to the name? A sense of disbelief, the desire to fall out in the floor laughing, a "that's ridiculous, what is wrong with those parents?" feeling? I can only imagine, because when I saw this on the news this morning, I thought "...no way on earth!" I mean, what on earth would ever possess a parent to create such a moniker for an innocent young child?

A name is something we carry with us all through our life. It can determine our character (yes I believe there is power and meaning behind a name) and is attached to us wherever we go.

Yahoo News reports:

Family court judge Rob Murfitt said in a judgement made in February -- but not released until Thursday -- that oddball monikers created social hurdles as children grew up.
"She fears being mocked and teased and in that she has a greater level of insight than either of her parents," he said of the girl.
The judge discovered New Zealand parents had given their children some other unusual names including Number 16 Bus Shelter and Midnight Chardonnay, both of which may relate to the conception of the child.
One child was named Violence and two pairs of twins were called Benson and Hedges and Fish and Chips. The children from one family were all named after six-cylinder Ford cars.

Can you imagine being named after a six-cylinder Ford vehicle? I guess they can be glad they weren't named Chitty Chitty Bang Bang! :D:D:D:D:D (sorry, my odd sense of humor kicked in for a moment there.)

No, in all honesty, how unfair to a child. Imagine being named "Number 16 Bus Station." Can you imagine the conversations that would start; not to mention, how many people would question whether that was the location of conception?

Judge Rob Murfitt is appalled and worries about the torment that Talulah goes through from classmates. She has asked classmates to call her "K" as she is so ashamed of revealing her real name. More information available here

Talulah is not a bad name as far as I am concerned and somewhat pretty. As for the rest, it is a bit farfetched? At what point should parents be restricted in the names they choose for their children? Is there any type of system in place here in the States that limits parents regarding what they name their children? Thoughts?

Conservative Crusader Star Parker

Star Parker has become a crusader for conservativism. I think it is interesting to see the stand that she is taking in her program CURE. Citizen Link offers a Q&A session with her here

Also, here is an interesting article written by this intelligent woman of color. I want to do more research on her; however, find it intriguing that she is taking the stand she is taking.

....some photos of Toni, I caught over the weekend.

Busy....

We've been in Revival with Rev. Michael Disotell. This revival has been much needed and God is moving. 3 people, I believe, have received the Holy Ghost, and we have had a number of brand new visitors. We have 3 nights yet to go. We shall see what God has yet to do. :)

We start our children's crusade next week. That should be fun, working with the kids is always interesting and then PEAK conference is coming up in a couple of weeks.

In addition, I've been working on raising money for an upcoming missions trip and finishing a college class, while getting things ready for our annual report at work. It looks like I will be switching back to my MBA. I've been in an MLS program and it just has not felt like a right fit. I have prayed about this and feel that if I'm going to do my masters I want to stay within the field I've been studying in. So here we go again with another switch. Oh well, all is well that ends well. Who said that summer is a time to lay back, relax, and shoot the breeze? Not for me! However, no complaints here. :) Life is crankin'! Busy, busy, busy.....

Family Fun

What fun we had! Especially the kids.  Fishing, swatting mosquitos, cooking out, swatting flies, spinning tales, swatting mosquitos, squeezing way too many people in the motor home, killing flies, boating, swatting mosquitos, etc....Family is the best.  We left all of our church and work business at home and just relaxed in the 106* heat.  It was still a good time........

Happy 4th of July!!!!!!!

I am going out of town to help my nephew get enrolled in college and then will meet up with family to go camping. I am NOT taking my laptop, as I will be taking a break from computing and the internet. Working on the computer everyday, either for my job or doing my schooling, gets to be exhausting and mind consuming. It is of my personal opinion that sometimes we, as humanity need to deprive ourselves of some of the conveniences in life, for a time, periodically. This way, once we have them back, we appreciate them. Most importantly however, it gives us the chance to find that we can still survive without them, we can function, and we can excercise our mind in other ways. As for us, we are going to fish, canoe, go boating, probably do some swimming, go hiking, shoot fireworks, play card games and just hang out with each other and have fun together.

Have a great time with your family and friends and be safe. In the process, remember to thank a member of the military because Freedom is never Free! And if you are at an American, Independence Day celebration.....cheer for America, even if you're not from here. Why?!? Well, if you are here, you came for a reason didn't ya? :)

*We don't cut off people's heads because they don't believe like us. (yet)
*Our women don't have to go in public with a veil over their face. (yet)
*We can still freely practice our faith. (so far)
*We still have freedom of speech. ( for the most part)
*We get paid more than $6.00 a week. (so far)
*We don't have to wait two years for our social healthcare system to pay for us to get a tooth pulled. (or finally have to pull it with a wrench, because the wait is so long) (so far)
*We don't administrate ethnic cleansings. (so far)
*Our government doesn't hang us for voicing a dissenting opinion. (yet)
*We don't send suicide bombers into our own public squares to terrorize the masses into submission to a political sect, or religious zealots.
*We don't have to abandon our children to orphanages, because the government only allows us one child.
*We don't have to hide in jungles and forrests, while our men become mercenaries and rebels fighting for democracy. (so far)
*We don't teach our three year olds to cut themselves, whip themselves, or self inflict to prove their religious zeal.
*We don't try to ride across the border, on the engine of a vehicle, because we are so desperate to get to a different country. (or run down the middle of an interstate, with 10 lanes of traffic, going 85 mph)
*We don't make it legal for children to work in silk factories, to pay supposed family debts, from the age of 3 up.
*We don't teach our boys to be soldiers, by time their 10, and keep them so drugged up that they are killing, and raping, machines and call them a military.
*We don't, typically, knock off political figures because we can't stand them or what they stand for.

~Shall I go on.....

America has its faults and disgraces, but so far, we are still more blessed than the majority of the world. Why we would want to go back to being under European rule is beyond me, however, that is a post for another day. :) Happy 4th of July!!!!!
